Keepin’ it varied, are we ASUS? Just a few months after we peeked a pair of WirelessHD-equipped laptops at ASUS’ Computex booth, in flies this — news that the company has aligned with Amimon and joined the WHDI Consortium to boot. It’s hard to say if the introduction of the WiCast EW2000 is in direct response to HP’s Wireless TV Connect, but it sure looks mighty similar in practice. The two-piece set connects to a PC via USB (it’s USB powered, too) and to an HDTV via HDMI. Once you’re setup, you can stream 1080p video (including Blu-ray and DRM’d material) straight to your tele with under a millisecond of lag, and better still, you could connect it to an HDMI-equipped set-top box or game console for cordless machine-to-device magic. Mum’s the word on price, but there’s a delightful promo video ready to get you amped up about it just past the break.Continue reading ASUS teams with Amimon on WiCast EW2000 1080p streamerASUS teams with Amimon on WiCast EW2000 1080p streamer originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 02 Sep 2010 04:27:00 EDT. It’s been a long, long time since we first got our hands on the Boxee Box QWERTY remote. Since then the device went through something of an existential crisis before suffering a sad delay. Now we have some encouraging news for its planned November release date: the QWERTY remote has hit the FCC. Called simply the “Remote controller” (model numbers DSM-221, DSM-22), it looks to have passed with flying colors, the FCC celebrating by ripping it to bits and photographing every piece of exposed silicon. Want to see the cruel results? We have a taste after the break, but for the rest of the grisly photos you’ll have to hit that source link.Continue reading Boxee Box QWERTY remote hits the FCC, its innards splayed asunderBoxee Box QWERTY remote hits the FCC, its innards splayed asunder originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Sep 2010 08:57:00 EDT. A major bookmaker in Ireland called Paddy Power is taking bets that the iPhone 4 will be recalled some time this year. The odds set out by the company have slowly shrunk over the past few hours, from 4 to 6 (60 percent chance of recall), to 4 to 5 (55 percent), and now to even odds. Evidently, Paddy Power is coming ’round to realize that betting on an iPhone 4 recall might not be that smart.

It’s getting harder to keep a secret. Companies toil over surprise parties and then some blabber-mouth spills the beans. In this case the host is Olympus and the one holding the empty can is 43rumors who has word of a series of coming announcements from the company. First, on August 31, Olympus is said to be revealing a new E-P2 kit offering a 17mm lens and an external flash. Also announced will supposedly be a pair of new M.Zuiko lenses: a $900 75 – 300mm (150 – 600mm equivalent) f/4.8 – 6.7 model and a $300 40 – 150mm (80 – 300mm equivalent) f/4.0 – 5.6 model. More interesting, though, is a follow-up announcement said to be coming on September 14, when Olympus will supposedly announce the E-5, a replacement for the E-3 DSLR. This, we’re told, will bump the megapixel count up to 12 from 10 and offer 720p30 video recording. Now that all that is out of the bag, the only question is: what will you be bringing to the parties?New E-P2 kit and E-5 DSLR rumored, Olympus surprise parties ruined originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 Aug 2010 07:48:00 EDT. Entelligence is a column by technology strategist and author Michael Gartenberg, a man whose desire for a delicious cup of coffee and a quality New York bagel is dwarfed only by his passion for tech. In these articles, he’ll explore where our industry is and where it’s going — on both micro and macro levels — with the unique wit and insight only he can provide.
We are all familiar with Moore’s law. The observation made by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore that the density of semiconductors doubles roughly every eighteen months. The net result? It’s always going to be better faster and cheaper. Certainly that’s been true of the phone space, with large screens, fast processors and lots of storage.
In the last few weeks alone I’ve looked at new phones with 1Ghz processors, the latest and greatest software platforms from Google and RIM… but it’s been one little gadget that’s caught my attention and it totally bucks the trend. What device? It’s the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro — which is a lot of name for a small phone — and it shows some very different thinking about what a smartphone is. In theory, this isn’t a phone that I should like. Instead of a large 4.3-inch screen, it’s running a 2.55-inch screen at 240 x 320 resolution. Don’t look for a 1Ghz processor here. It’s got an ARMv6 revision 5 processor at 600Mhz. Finally, forget Froyo or even Eclair. This thing’s got Android 1.6 on it and may never get updated to the latest and greatest. Despite all that, I think Sony Ericsson has a potential hit on their hands if they decide to bring this to the US later this year as they said they plan to. Why am I so enamored?Continue reading Entelligence: when less beats MooreEntelligence: when less beats Moore originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 17:08:00 EDT. Well, it looks like you can finally get rid of that less-than-stable pre-alpha release of Fennec (a.k.a. Firefox Mobile) for Android — Mozillla has just released the full alpha release for not only Android (2.0 and later), but the Nokia N900 as well. The big news with this release is an increase in “performance and responsiveness to user actions” (always a good thing), as well as two new features dubbed “Electrolysis” and “Layers,” the former of which lets the browser interface run in a separate process from the one rendering web content, while the latter promises to “greatly improve performance in graphic intensive actions like scrolling, zooming, animations and video.” You’ll also get full support for add-ons, and Firefox Sync built into the browser to let you have a continuous experience as you move between devices. Cellular data’s coming along nicely, too, as you can see on the video after the break — so here’s the million-dollar question: when this is rock-solid and ready for prime time, are you jumping ship or sticking with Maemo?Continue reading Fully-functional Android port for N900 threatens to beat N9 to marketFully-functional Android port for N900 threatens to beat N9 to market originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 00:12:00 EDT. Remember that midrange, Android-equipped MB520 Kobe from Moto we told you about a few days back? Well, it’s stepping out for the first time this evening with a little help of our dear brother from another mother, Mr. Blurrycam. As we’d heard before it’s definitely destined for AT&T bearing Android 2.1 with Blur (complete with Blur logo on back), though our tipster tells us we can expect an update to 2.2 over the air. Along with “Kobe,” the codename “Diablo” is apparently being tossed around internally, though decisions have been made on what to call it when it hits shelves. A Droid X competitor it’s not — but coming off the Backflip debacle, it’s baby steps for Moto’s Android relationship with AT&T, right? Hit the break for more shots.
[Thanks, Napoleon]

HP’s trumping of Dell’s bid for 3PAR is a masterful preemptive strike. HP is certainly not that interested in 3PAR and will most likely not counter offer should Dell choose to pursue the deal. What HP is interested in is making the buy as expensive as possible for Dell in order to throw a wrench into the PC giant’s further acquisitions ambitions.

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/HTC_s_crazy_boombox_phone_for_AT_T_running_Windows_Phone_7′; In case you needed any more evidence that AT&T is going all-in with Windows Phone 7, take a gander at this little beast, a phone known only as the HTC T8788 at this point (rest assured, you’ll get a snappy, memorable, trademarkable name by the time it’s on shelves). Though it’s a landscape slider, it doesn’t slide to reveal what you’d normally expect — a keyboard, that is. Instead, you get a speaker, an unusual (though not unprecedented) concept that should make this a decent media device… and the kickstand around back should help with that, too. We’d argue that this is the prettiest WinPho 7-powered device we’ve seen so far — not surprising, considering HTC’s reputation — though we’re sure plenty of folks would prefer the QWERTY. Check another shot in the gallery below!

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_gets_official_teaser_video’; Whoa, now we’re talking. It’s short, sweet, and dramatic, yet the official Samsung Galaxy Tab teaser video still manages to reveal a number of features previously only rumored. We’ve got Android 2.2 running on a 7-inch display, video calling, Swype, HD movie playback, “Flash support,” GPS navigation, an e-reader, and plenty more. Now get ready to be teased mercilessly by the video embedded after the break — it’s as close as you’ll get before the official reveal in Berlin (at IFA) on September 2nd. Yeah, we’ll be there.
Update: here’s a few other things we’ve noticed from the trailer. In addition to the aforementioned details, the floating text also references augmented reality and video calling (perhaps indicating a front-facing camera as well). Speaking of cameras, you’ll notice in one shot what appears to be a LED flash bulb next to the camera. Must we really wait another 9 or so days? Remember MSI’s Windows 7 WindPad that we went hands-on with back in June at Computex? Of course you do. Well even though it’s been given a bit of Photoshop polish lately, MSI isn’t planning on launching it until Intel releases its Oak Trail Atom platform for tablets and netbooks at CES 2011. MSI’s Andy Tung told us that the current Atom platform just doesn’t provide adequate battery life and power for the form factor, and that it’s finding the Oak Trail platform to be much better in all areas with the Windows 7 OS. Tung also said it’s still experimenting with the dualscreen Win 7 tablet, but similarly needs a better hardware platform. Oh don’t worry, there’s still some tablet love to come from MSI this year — the company still plans to release its Tegra 2-powered, Android 2.2 WindPad 110 tablet in time for the holiday season. MSI is working with Google, and we were told that the Android tablet should have access to some sort of app store. It’s clearly got the tablet bug, and Tung even told us that the company is minimizing the number of netbooks it has in its lineup. That sure seems to be a common trend these days.MSI waiting on Intel Oak Trail for Win 7 tablet, Android version will hit before end of the year originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Aug 2010 13:53:00 EDT. While the Willow Garage-initiated ROS is designed to consolidate and accelerate robotics innovation for the long term, it’s still a long ways from powering your robotic butler / life coach / best friend, so it’s exciting to see it put to use in the here and now. The folks at Thecorpora, responsible for the Qbo open source robot project, have been busy converting Qbo’s original Java API into ROS, and just announced they’re at 99.9 percent completion of that task. That means the Qbo gets instant access to some of the fun development going on in ROS, like stacking all its cameras and ultrasonic sensors into a system for machine vision, or controlling the bot with a Wiimote or a PS3 controller. (There’s a video after the break of the Wiimote in action). Don’t think Qbo will be powerful enough for you? Willow Garage just announced that it’s about to put its own ROS-powered PR2 bot on sale soon, after a few months of its (highly successful) PR2 Beta Program.Continue reading Open source Qbo bot makes the jump to ROS, the open source robot OSOpen source Qbo bot makes the jump to ROS, the open source robot OS originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Aug 2010 22:45:00 EDT.
