Pew study finds majority of Americans don’t want government to prioritize affordable broadband

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 13-08-2010

We hold great respect for the Pew Internet and American Life Project, whose statistical practices are transparent, robust and rarely filled with logical holes, but we have to wonder why the organization decided to ask if Americans would support affordable high-speed internet using their tax dollars. 53% of 2,252 telephoned adults said it shouldn’t be a major priority, which is significant, to be sure, but when Pew’s 2009 study showed that most individuals without broadband don’t want it, and their 2008 survey confirmed that 62 percent of dial-up users were still A-OK, we have to imagine researchers might have seen this coming. Those with broadband don’t need it, those without it don’t want it. Never mind about education, health, economic reform — you know, all those other priorities. Nevertheless, these are interesting results, and if you’re a proponent of the FCC’s National Broadband Plan you’d best have a look.Pew study finds majority of Americans don’t want government to prioritize affordable broadband originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 08:13:00 EDT. Sony Dash update brings Shoutcast, app shortcuts and the true meaning of life

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 13-08-2010

Got yourself a Sony Dash, did you? If so, right about now would be a beautiful time to unplug it and plug it back in, as that’ll trigger a minty fresh update to download and apply. This newfangled software build will not only add Shoutcast as an available internet radio station, but it also brings app shortcuts and a hastened add / delete app process. It ain’t much, but it ain’t costly, either. Let us know in comments how it all works out for you, cool?

Dell Thunder spied again, still looking awesome

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 13-08-2010

Looks like the faucet’s starting to turn wide open on Thunder leaks, seeing how this would be the second we’ve seen in a single day — and we suppose you could even count this one twice since the source appears to have two units at his disposal. AndroidSPIN doesn’t have any new details to report with this round of shots, but needless to say, talk of a 4.1-inch AMOLED display looks as real as ever, and it looks like all of these test units are running stock Android 2.1. Sadly, considering how long the Mini 5 / Streak was in the leak pipeline prior to release, we can’t promise that we’re going to see a retail launch on this one any time soon — but it certainly gives you pause before pulling the trigger on an AT&T-locked version of the Streak now, doesn’t it?Dell Thunder spied again, still looking awesome originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Aug 2010 17:16:00 EDT. Epic 4G coming August 31st for $249.99 on contract (updated)

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 12-08-2010

Like your Samsung Galaxy S with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a dash of WiMAX? Sprint’s website has finally spilled the beans: the Epic 4G will arrive Tuesday, August 31st for $249.99 on contract (after $150 instant rebate and $100 mail-in rebate). Oddly enough, we’ve gotten a number of screencaps from readers who see an August 20th date, one that coincides with an upcoming Epic 4G promo we caught wind of, but the press release definitively lists the 31st. No way to pre-order at this point — reservations begin Friday, according to the press release — but feel free to sign up for reminders. Whew, glad that mystery’s finally solved. PR after the break.

Update: With Sprint now offering two Android-powered 4G smartphones, you’re probably wondering, Epic 4G or EVO 4G? Fortunately, Sprint’s got a video laying out the differences highlighting the Epic’s Super AMOLED display, keyboard, Samsung Media Hub movie store (available post-launch), and DLNA to wirelessly send pics and video to other DLNA devices in the home. Check it out after the break.

Update 2: Although reservations for in-store pickup aren’t set to begin until tomorrow, we’ve been tipped on a reservation link intended for premier customers. [Thanks, Miguel]

DARPA enlists NVIDIA to build exascale supercomputer that’s ‘1000x faster’ than today’s quickest

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 11-08-2010

At this point, it’s pretty obvious that GPUs will soon be playing a huge role in modern day supercomputers — a role that may just rival that of the tried-and-true CPU. Virginia Tech is gleefully accepting $2 million in order to build a GPU and CPU-enabled HokieSpeed supercomputer, and today DARPA is handing out $25 million to NVIDIA in order to develop “high-performance GPU computing systems.” Specifically the Defense Department’s research and development arm is aiming to address a so-called “crisis in computing,” and if all goes well, the four-year project will eventually yield a “new class of exascale supercomputers which will be 1,000-times more powerful than today’s fastest supercomputers.” That’s a pretty lofty goal, but NVIDIA will be aided by Cray, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a half-dozen US universities along the way. And yeah, if ever anyone’s ego was prepared to topple Moore’s Law, it’d be this guy.Continue reading DARPA enlists NVIDIA to build exascale supercomputer that’s ‘1000x faster’ than today’s quickestDARPA enlists NVIDIA to build exascale supercomputer that’s ‘1000x faster’ than today’s quickest originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 05:38:00 EDT. Artificial bee eye gives diminutive robotic air drones wider range of vision

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 10-08-2010

We’d bother telling you up front that it also gives them a new sense of purpose, but you’re already versed in how the impending Robot Apocalypse is going to go down. Wolfgang Stürzl and his best buds over at Bielefeld University in Germany have just published a report detailing how an artificial bee eye could improve the vision of miniature robots — ones that fly, in particular. By using a catadioptric imaging system, which captures an image using both mirrors and lenses, they were able to utilize a single camera to capture a full 280-degrees of vision, and a lowly internal computer is able to stitch the two panes together in order to create a usable image that humans can interpret. The idea here is to provide more sight with less space, bringing us one step closer to actually having our very own ‘fly-on-the-wall’ moment. Comforting, no?Artificial bee eye gives diminutive robotic air drones wider range of vision originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 09 Aug 2010 10:42:00 EDT. Best Buy pegs Droid 2 at $199 with 2-year activation, $599 without (updated)

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 09-08-2010

It’s rather astounding to believe we’ve come this far without Verizon or Motorola so much as recognizing the Droid 2’s existence, but with leaks like this on a weekly basis who needs traditional marketing? Astute reader Greg from North Carolina tells us his local Best Buy has those leaked dummy units out on shelves, and lo and behold, there’s a set of price tags right next to them. As originally rumored, the phone will launch at $199 with carrier subsidy and $599 should you choose to cart it home without a plan in tow. Still no solid confirmation of that August 12 release date, but at this rate we expect the handset may sell out before Verizon’s PR team breathes a word. Spot the full image after the break.

Update: On a related note, the original Droid is now “out of stock” on Verizon’s website.

Update 2: Oh what the hell, dropped in an official “coming soon” Droid 2 advertising supplement making its way into newspapers.

DIYer constructs 4.3-inch Open SciCal graphing calculator, puts your TI-83+ to shame

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 08-08-2010

What’s 4.3-inches diagonally, costs $200 to build and has absolutely no reception issues when held as shown in the image above? Why, the Open SciCal! Matt Stack, the genius who pieced this gem together, relied on a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, 8GB SD card, WiFi module and a spartan web browser in order to concoct what’s likely the most desirable graphing calculator this side of Pluto. The handheld device weighs about 1.6 pounds, runs Linux as well as the statistically inclined R, and is reportedly capable of doing roughly twice as much crunching as Texas Instruments’ Nspire. Skeptical? Considering that this bad boy sucked down stock data from Yahoo! Finance and ran auto-correlation on the numbers in order to near-instantly report current trends, we’re guessing TI (or any other graphing calculator company, really) has no room to argue. Hit the source for more details, and don’t worry — that feeling of insignificance wanes with time.DIYer constructs 4.3-inch Open SciCal graphing calculator, puts your TI-83+ to shame originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 07 Aug 2010 03:26:00 EDT. Former HP CEO Mark Hurd rewarded with a $40m severance after being forced to resign over fraudulent expense reports

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 07-08-2010

Worried that former HP CEO Mark Hurd might not know what to do with himself after getting caught falsifying expense reports to hide girl #2 and being forced to resign? Don’t be: ol’ Mark’s getting a $12,224,693 severance payment in exchange for agreeing not to sue HP. Yep, Mark Hurd just got $12 million in cash for fraudulently filing expense reports to conceal his mistress — not a bad trick if you can pull it off, we suppose. (We don’t know how much he’ll have to pay back, but we’re guessing he’ll have a little cash left over.) Oh, and he’s also having his option to buy 775,000 shares of HP stock extended to September, which is pretty groovy considering HP actually upped its quarterly forecast today, some other assorted stock-related compensation, and 18 months of health and dental benefits. Whoever said a little white collar crime doesn’t pay?

Update: CNBC has sources claiming the total value of Hurd’s severance including stocks is closer to $40-50 million, give or take. That’s… well, that’s a lot of ink cartridges.Continue reading Former HP CEO Mark Hurd rewarded with a $40m severance after being forced to resign over fraudulent expense reportsFormer HP CEO Mark Hurd rewarded with a $40m severance after being forced to resign over fraudulent expense reports originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 06 Aug 2010 19:17:00 EDT. ASUS planning an 8-inch grayscale LCD e-reader for October, pricing expected ‘under $599′

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 07-08-2010

Unless ASUS means “$400 under $599,” we’ve got a feeling this e-reading device might as well not try its luck on the market. Nevertheless, word from Taiwan is that the company is indeed preparing an 8-inch LCD-based ebook reader — with 64 levels of gray, no backlight, and fast refresh times — to take on the E Ink-powered incumbents this October. Sounds very much like the Eee Tablet to us, but the headline feature of handwriting recognition isn’t mentioned, so this could be the same or a slightly different device. A saving grace for this spendy slate may be ASUS’ current negotiations for mobile carrier subsidies, which may prevent users from ever having to (directly) clash with that exorbitant price. That also suggests this 8-incher will have 3G connectivity on board, which might make it an appealing straddler of categories if it manages to accessorize itself with a robust web browser and healthy battery life. Let’s wait and see, eh?ASUS planning an 8-inch grayscale LCD e-reader for October, pricing expected ‘under $599′ originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 06 Aug 2010 17:44:00 EDT. Canon’s X Mark I Mouse triples as calculator, numeric keypad, fame attractor

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 07-08-2010

We know, we know — you’re practically married to your existing Razer or Logitech, but it looks like you may want to phone your lawyer and get the separation papers flowing. Canon — of all companies — has just introduced its latest critter, and it may very well be the most spectacular mousing device in the history of mousing devices. The unquestionably magical X Mark I Mouse is a wireless laser mouse underneath, but it also doubles as a fully functional calculator and a numeric keypad to boot. Bluetooth 2.0 is responsible for the connections, and the 1,200dpi sensor should please all but the most particular of users. It’ll also play nice with both OS X and Windows platforms, leaving us with an inexplicable need to handle one prior to the scheduled November launch date. Oh, the price? A paltry £39.99 / €48.99 / $63, but really, you’d pay anything those blokes asked to have one of your own.Canon’s X Mark I Mouse triples as calculator, numeric keypad, fame attractor originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 06 Aug 2010 09:51:00 EDT. HP CEO Mark Hurd resigns over sexual harassment investigation (updated with liveblog!)

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 07-08-2010

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/HP_CEO_Mark_Hurd_resigns_over_sex_scandal’;Wild news out of HP just now — CEO Mark Hurd has just resigned over a sexual harassment investigation. Hurd and HP’s board of directors decided that he should resign following a sexual harassment claim against Hurd and HP by a former marketing contractor — HP claims that although there was no violation of its sexual harassment policy, Hurd violated the company’s standards of business conduct by submitting inaccurate expense reports that covered his relationship with the contractor. CFO Cathie Lesjak is taking over on an interim basis, and she’s actually upping the company’s forecasts for next quarter, saying Mark’s resignation has nothing to do with HP’s performance and everything to do with his behavior. A committee led by former Netscape CEO Marc Andreessen has been formed to find a new CEO; Lesjak has asked to be excluded, and HP declined to answer if Jon Rubinstein was being considered when we asked.

Update: We liveblogged the media call — check it after the break!

Update 2: A quick note from the investor call, which mostly repeated the same info — interim CEO Cathie Lesjak said that although Mark Hurd was a “strong leader, at the end of the day, he didn’t drive our initiatives — it was the organization that supported Mark in driving those initiatives.” Ouch — given Mark’s recent history of saying things like “we didn’t buy Palm to get into the smartphone business,” it certainly seems like he might have been a little distracted.

Update 3: We’ve just received the full text of the letter interim HP CFO Cathie Lesjak sent to all employees — check it after the break.Continue reading HP CEO Mark Hurd resigns over sexual harassment investigation (updated with liveblog!)HP CEO Mark Hurd resigns over sexual harassment investigation (updated with liveblog!) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 06 Aug 2010 17:51:00 EDT. Meridian launches M80 high-end compact entertainment system, we yawn

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 06-08-2010

If you’d have asked us back in 2008 to predict what new features a successor to Meridian’s Ferrari co-branded F80 compact entertainment system would have, things like HD video playback in the form of an HD DVD or Blu-ray player, an HDMI connection and iPod integration would have been no-brainers. So forgive us if we’re less than impressed now that the M80 has arrived, sporting what appears to be only a minor exterior make-over and the companion i80 iPod Dock packaged in as a bonus. Is it nice to get both products for less than its Italian sports car-taxed predecessor? Sure. But we’d really like to see more from Meridian than a few pieces of hand-tooled English leather supporting its still bankruptcy-inspiring $2,995 MSRP. Eurocom debuts Optimus-equipped B5100M FOX, B7110 FOX gaming laptops

Last we heard from Eurocom, it was touting its massive, workstation-class X8100 Leopard “laptop,” and its now back with a pair of models that are considerably more consumer-friendly — and gamer-friendly, specifically. Apple iPod touch LCD screen with front-facing camera slot spied?

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 05-08-2010

You may or may not be aware, but Apple has a penchant for announcing new iPods in early September, as it has for years. With just over four weeks to go before the most likely (but nigh confirmed) press event week is upon us, expect the rumor mill to ratchet up appropriately. Here’s one care of Mac Rumors; the gang’s been sent some pictures from parts supplier iPhonerevivers that allegedly show a new iPod touch LCD screen And sure enough, in place of an earpiece is a slot perfectly suited for that oft-rumored (and possibly email-based) front-facing camera. It’s not the first time we’ve seen this piece — the resemblance to early July’s leak doesn’t escape us — but these photos are decidedly fresh and from a different source. Mounting evidence… or are we all just being had? Wouldn’t surprise us if we found out for sure before ides of September.Apple iPod touch LCD screen with front-facing camera slot spied? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 05 Aug 2010 17:08:00 EDT. eStation Zeen is HP Slate? Update: Or a Compaq Android tablet for printing?

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 05-08-2010

Reach deep into the grey matter and try to recall a little post we did back on December 30th of 2009. That’s the day we learned about HP’s filing for the “Zeen” trademark on a “portable handheld device.” Now here we are today, eight months and one major aquisition later, with an FCC filing for a very tablety device with 802.11b/g/n WiFi. The name? HP eStation Zeen. Unfortunately, that’s all we know due to the short-term confidentiality request put in place until December 31st. Still, product CQ720A looks very much like the mythical HP Slate don’t you think? It’s definitely a tablet of some kind. Now if only we knew the chosen OS, price, ship date, consumer or business focus, and about a dozen or so other details. Baby steps, people, baby steps.

Update: This is crazy, but we’ve now gotten multiple tips claiming that the Zeen is actually an Android-based tablet with e-reader functionality that can also dock with an HP printer and become its interface. E-reading, Zeen, magazine — get it? Based on HP’s repeated previous statements about webOS hitting printers and tablets, we’d assume the Zeen has since been shifted over to Palm’s OS, but we can’t be sure, as that would undoubtedly add development time and we’re told this thing has been kicking around for months.

Whatever this is, it appears HP still has some work to do: one of our sources described the Android-based prototype as feeling like a “brick” and being “extremely unpolished” with poor battery life. Apple’s Snow Leopard patches include outdated Flash Player fix

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 05-08-2010

Apple on Tuesday patched 28 vulnerabilities in is Snow Leopard operating system, including two in Adobe’s Flash Player. But in another example of the tension between the two companies — sparked by Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ rejection of Flash as slow, buggy and obsolete — Adobe immediately countered by noting that Apple’s Flash fixes were already outdated.MICROSOFT

PlayOn’s web app brings Hulu and Netflix to iPod touch, iPhone

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 04-08-2010

Tired of waiting around for Apple’s “review process” to complete? So was PlayOn. Rather than sticking it out and dealing with the App Store’s near-limitless amount of red tape, the content streaming startup has kicked out an HTML5 web app that enables Hulu (for now, at least) and Netflix streaming to iPod touch and iPhone devices. It’s still hard at work perfecting things for the iPad, but given that it’s completely free to surf over to its mobile web site (linked below), it’s tough to complain with what we’re being given right now. Early testers have praised the app’s speed, and while you’ll still need a Windows PC (yeah, PlayOn still doesn’t have a Mac client) and a PlayOn subscription before indulging on your mobile, at least you’ve got an option that you once didn’t. So, anyone digging the new avenue?

Lego bipedal bot takes several small stairs for man, one big fall for robotkind (video)

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 04-08-2010

Climbing stairs is one of the hardest physical tasks for a bipedal collection of motors and circuits, as Honda’s ASIMO can relate, but one man’s managed to achieve just that with this head-banging Lego Mindstorms NXT robot. After spending years tinkering with the plastic blocks, 222Doc’s X-2 Chicken Walking Biped can autonomously walk up and down flights of small steps with relative ease, perform headstands and even scale five-inch cinder block cliffs if precariously pushed. The robot requires only seven Lego servo motors plus a touch sensor and gyroscope in each foot, but also uses a pair of third-party multiplexers (also spotted in that transforming Wall-E) for fine control of the extra motors. Watch it perform after the break, but stop the second video at 3:20 if pain makes you queasy — the bot takes a pretty ugly spill.Continue reading Lego bipedal bot takes several small stairs for man, one big fall for robotkind (video)Lego bipedal bot takes several small stairs for man, one big fall for robotkind (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 03 Aug 2010 21:12:00 EDT. Pantech drops AMOLED completely due to shortage, may resume use in 2H 2011

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 03-08-2010

The Pantech Vega that just hit Korea may boast a sizable 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, but don’t expect future phones from the Helio manufacturer to follow suit — after suffering the same shortages that drove HTC to Sony’s SLCD-illuminated doorstep, Pantech’s also temporarily giving active-matrix organic technology the boot. Now, you may not give two nickels about the technologies in Pantech’s next handset, but the firm’s got a finger on the industry’s pulse. So when an unnamed executive says “phones to be rolled out in the first half of next year” won’t use AMOLED, that hints at when the shortage for US-bound devices might also let up. In case you’re curious, 2H 2011 is when Samsung’s next AMOLED facility is slated to open, though by that point AU Optronics and TPO Display should be shipping the screens as well.Pantech drops AMOLED completely due to shortage, may resume use in 2H 2011 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 03 Aug 2010 19:38:00 EDT. 3D Vision hack uses active shutter glasses to display 3D content in 2D (video)

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 03-08-2010

Stereoscopic display sharing — or using one monitor to show two separate programs simultaneously — has piqued quite a few people’s interest lately. Both Microsoft and Sony have been developing ways to do this, and now there is a post on the 3D Vision Blog outlining how to modify your NVIDIA 3D Vision glasses to accept either the left or right image from a 3D display. You’ll be opening the glasses up (careful!), soldering things like shutters and IR receivers, bridging this and that, but by the time you’re done you’ll be able to watch TV in the way that nature intended, beautiful, glorious 2D! (You can see it in action after the break.) Now, if only we could figure out how to watch color TV programs in black and white…Continue reading 3D Vision hack uses active shutter glasses to display 3D content in 2D (video)3D Vision hack uses active shutter glasses to display 3D content in 2D (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 15:18:00 EDT. Dell Studio XPS 9100 arrives with six cores, little fanfare

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 02-08-2010

AMD had its turn in the high-end Dell desktop spotlight, but it’s time for another Intel beast, as the company’s quietly upgraded its tower lineup to support Intel’s consumer-grade champion chip, the 3.33GHz Core i7-980X. While the new Studio XPS 9100 looks just the same as its predecessor on the outside and sports the same basic options and ports, internally there’s a 525W power supply with enough juice for a Radeon HD 5970 2GB graphics card (a $580 option) and slots for up to 24GB of DDR3 memory. You won’t be getting any of this pixel-pushing goodness on the $950 base model, of course, which has only a (respectable) quad-core 2.66GHz Core i7-920 and an Nvidia GeForce G310 512MB, but the machine looks like it could hold its own with low-end Alienware cousins if you get into $2,000+ territory. Call us crazy, but we think there’s a configurator session with your name on it. Best Buy to slash prices for old Xbox 360 special edition bundles tomorrow? (Update: yes)

Filed Under (Software) by Admin on 01-08-2010

Let’s face it: despite the new Xbox 360 being joyously quieter and more efficient, the previous model still manages to seduce some of us with its sexy curves. Speaking of which — according to Joystiq’s source, Best Buy’s going to kick off August by lowering the prices for the Splinter Cell: Conviction and Final Fantasy XIII previous-gen Xbox 360 bundles. For just $299 — $50 off the current price point (and $100 off the launch price) — you still get a copy of the corresponding game title, a 250GB HDD, and two wireless controllers. So that’s gaming sorted for the summer; now put that $50 towards some cooling aid and you’re good to go.
